The Dimple Maker - the Craziest Beauty Invention in the History

Dimples are indentations or folds in the fleshy part of the cheek. They are caused by a minor muscle deformity in which the skin of the cheek draws tightly as it moves, resulting in external divots.

However, not everyone is born with dimples. But, In 1936, a woman claimed to have invented a device that could give people dimples.

Isabella Gilbert, a woman from New York, invented the Dimple-Maker in 1936. Its function is self-explanatory. Its goal is to create dimples for those who wished to have dimples but were born without them.

It was a strange-looking device with wires and knobs that could dent your face. This device was worn over the cheeks while two knobs were pressed to create the desired indentations. Her advertisement claimed that continued use would result in a lovely set of dimples.

On September 26th, 1923, Evangeline I. Gilbert filed a patent for the product. It was classified as a device for shaping the face. The description stated, "One object of the invention is to provide a construction which will make it possible to produce dimples in the chain of the user. Another object of the invention is to provide a construction in which dimples may be made simultaneously in the chin and bother cheek’s."

Evangeline profited up to $12,000 from the sale of her product. However, the American Medical Association (AMA) deemed this invention absurd, claiming that the "Dimple Maker" would not create new dimples or enlarge existing ones. They also claimed that long-term use of the device could lead to cancer.
